WCGAU Finals - Well done Ed!

On Friday morning Ed flew to Sydney to compete in the WCG 2004 national finals. After flying through the qualifying rounds in Melbourne, he was in with a real chance. I’m happy to report that Ed is now officially the Australian champion for Unreal Tournament 2004 having defeated all the other competitors from around the country. Having lost out of WCG last year, this year he defeated his arch rival Sickz (also from Melbourne) and he can progress to the world championships. In early October he’ll be flying to San Francisco to represent Australia in a tournament that sees competitors from 60 nations worldwide. Ed flys back into Melbourne in just under half an hour. I’m sure I’ll hear all the stories when he arrives. Hopefully I can get some video of the event to put online.

Bump Out day

It’s been a restful day today. I woke up and watched some of the Olympics before forcing myself out of bed to get started on the uni assignment I have due tomorrow. In all fairness it was handed out in week three (it’s now week seven) so I can’t complain about having to do it. I’ve just been so busy doing other things. The assignment itself is really simple due to the fact that now I am into week seven of the course, I’ve learnt a lot more and know all the shortcuts.

After a couple of hours on the assignment, I found myself home alone so I decided to head out to Haileybury to help with the bump out. Thanks to Dale and James for actually turning up, it really shows who’s there because they enjoy it and who’s there to fill the requirements. That said, everything was done in around three hours which is a great achievement. I’ll be putting the Tattoo gallery up soon so everyone non-Haileybury can see what I’ve been so busy with.

I came home straight away and continued with the assignment. I’m going to have to get it all printed now so that shouldn’t take more than an hour hopefully. It’s amazing how we’re half way through the semester already. I can’t wait for the summer holidays to come although I’ll probably end up working through them like I usually do.

In other news, Ed competed in the WCG qualifiers today. Naturally he caned the opposition and came first. That makes him officially the best in Melbourne at Unreal Tournament 2004. He’ll fly to Sydney in September to compete in the national semi-finals. If he wins there, then it’s off to San Francisco to take on the world. More on that later.

Open Transport Tycoon

I don’t play games very often. But Transport Tycoon is my all time favourite game. As the name suggests, the aim of the game is to build your own transit network. From buses to trains to air fleets, Transport Tycoon is one of the greatest games of all time. It’s starting to get a little old now but it’s still a lot of fun. The coolest part is that it now has an open source version so the game has been overhauled with new features and it now supports both Mac and PC!

If you want to get a copy you can get all the information at OpenTTD.

I was at work this morning attending to some of my eBay items and I’ve spent most of this afternoon playing Open Transport Tycoon, it’s so addictive! Whoops I missed my 12.30 lecture at RMIT. Oh well. :)

An odd day

Today hasn’t been a very exciting day but I have got a few things done. Things I discovered today:

  • Unreal Tournament server admins (that’s me) get free CD Keys for UT.
  • PayPal gave me a US $1.95 bonus in my account - I still haven’t worked out why.
  • Another 3 of my eBay auctions ended. Theme Park World is apparently worth $25!
  • The grass needs mowing around here but I couldn’t be bothered doing it.
  • Rod Koetsveld is still in business.
  • I found the driver CD for my iPAQ was in my briefcase all along.
  • I got a HD for my final Computer Foundations assignment.
  • Old uni text books are hard to get rid of. In fact, text books for uni are pointless so I’m not buying any next semester.
  • No one updated their blog.
  • You can’t put ice cream containers in the new recycling bin. But the bin itself holds about 6 times more than the old one.
  • The cat didn’t wake me up this morning.
  • I’ve had 5,000 hits already this month.
  • Behind Big Brother made their homepage read “Behind The Ryan Show” as a protest against Ryan being favoured in the house.
  • The WCGau site still hasn’t been updated
  • Everyone seems to be offline today. Is there something I should know?
  • The Axis cam I borrowed from work is online (but only during the holidays - address is /cam)
  • Bookmarks are much more organised when you put them in folders.
  • Egg and chips for lunch and pizza for dinner is not a healthy diet.
  • Camino doesn’t like being maximised and scrolled at the same time.
  • The Powerbook battery doesn’t last long enough when you are on wireless in bed and you don’t want to get up.

I’m sure there’s a lot more, but that’s the dot pointed way my day went.

Taking on Ed

When it comes to Unreal Tournament 2004, there’s not many people who can beat my brother. In fact, you have to be extremely good to even come close to beating him. So when Chris Taranto decided to boast about the fact that he was going to do it, I could hardly contain the laughter as I watched him get slaughtered over and over in a 15 minute one-on-one deathmatch last night. Chris was so hopeless that he didn’t even register a single frag and actaully managed to suicide 4 times, taking his score into the negative. After the 15 minutes was up, the final score was Ed 40 : Chris -4. ROFL - when’s the rematch?

Here’s a pic of the final scores:

CnC Generals

Out of my quest to find something to keep me occupied, I’ve been playing C&C Generals on my Powerbook. The game runs really well considering the extreme resources it demands. I have a 128MB video card but it still gets a little choppy in the big explosion scenes. It really makes me wonder what they expect people to use in their PCs to actually enjoy the game.

Before Generals was released some time ago, and being a C&C fan, I always wanted a copy but come release day, and I never got around to buying it. I do like it, although it does seem to be lacking something that I haven’t been able to put my finger on yet. It lacks an edge and the gameplay gets rather slow in parts. I’m progressing through the USA campaign at the moment so my opinion may change if I muck around with the other teams at some point. It’s really only something to keep me busy.
